The Kedge-Anchor or Young Sailors' Assistant 1859 Brady 10th Verplanck Colvin HC
Please see pics for condition of item and for any major issues. Our vintage books usually have reading or handling wear, discoloring, spine or cover creasing. No markings unless stated below.
Anything else of note: book has paper/board peeling from spine with a portion on top peeled off, spine is wibbly wobbly but papers sewn and attached ok at this time, bumped corners, edge and corner wear, stickers on back of front cover, foxing mainly on endpapers/last page, writing on a couple cover pages and on first page of Preface and on back of back cover, piece about Old Ironsides glued to bottom of back of back cover, remains of stamp/sticker on pages 176 & 177 with note about Buys Ballot's Law glued to page and notations on page 177, looks like some back endpapers were ripped out (maybe they were used for notes?).
There are also stamps of "Property of Verplanck Colvin" on a cover page and the last page and on the back of the back cover.
Verplanck Colvin (1847-1920) was a noted surveyor, topographical engineer, author, artist, explorer, and early environmentalist who worked with Teddy Roosevelt back when he was governor of New York. Colvin's work surveying New York's Adirondack Mountains also led to the establishment of the Adirondack Park in 1892.
